The name of the word 'Blu-ray' is coined from the technology which uses violet / blue laser to write and read data. The name is derived by combining the words 'blue' and 'ray' meaning for blue/ violet laser and optical ray, respectively. Blu-ray Disc Association has categorically stated that in the spelling of the word 'blu-ray', the letter 'e' has been left out intentionally for the purpose of registration as a trade mark and that it is not an omission or a mistake. You have to use the correct full name as Blu-ray Disc and not as Blu-ray Disk, which is an incorrect spelling. Similarly, Blu-ray is the correct shortened name and Blu-Ray is an incorrect spelling or capitalization. 'BD' is the correct abbreviated form whereas BRD or BR or wrongly abbreviated words.

The blu-ray spelling has created a lot of confusion in the electronics industry. Even today, most of the Blu-ray searches in major search engines like Google and Yahoo are done by keying the wrongly spelled words 'Blueray' or 'Blue-ray'. When you enter such misspelled searches, you will get Blue-ray in about 80% of the search results and Blueray in the remaining 20% of the searches. For instance, in a particular month, Overture reports the number of searches as 26708 for Blu-ray whereas 8618 searched for Blue-ray and 1082 keyed for Bluray.

In order to register it as a unique trademark, the Blu-ray Association, purposefully and tactfully removed the letter 'e' from the clear meaning word 'blue-ray'. As per the trademark laws, it would not have been possible for the Association to get a trademark in the name of meaningful words such as 'Blueray disc' or 'Blue-ray disc'.

Because of the confusion, many people search most of the time with the key words like, 'Blue-ray movies', 'Blue-ray players' or 'Blue-ray vs. HD DVD' etc. Ultimately, as a result of misspelling in the search box, they only get limited results about blu-ray, since the sites are also polluted with the spelling error. Major search engines like Google are programmed to make quick translation between, 'blu-ray and blueray' or 'blu-ray and blue-ray'. Though the misspelling considerably hurts the search result, you get 'did you mean' query back from the search engine to help you reach the necessary website.
